With London just around the corner every American gymnast is fighting for one thing- a place on that 5 member team. With Nationals and Trails in June there’s still some time to prove themselves. But as of right-now, here’s the contenders.
Jordyn Wieber: 2011 World And National Champion.
Unless she gets injured, I can’t imagine an olympics team without her. The current world champion bet Russian star Viktoria Komova in october and with her Amanar she’s a shoe in for the All-Around in London.
Alexandra Raisman: Member Of 2011 World Championships Team. Bronze Medal On Floor
Strong on 3 key events, and a talented All-Around gymnast. Aly can help the Team with her new Amanar and amazing floor routine. Placed 4th in the All-Around in world championships with a fall. Unfortunately her weekness on bars could hold her back but Martha loves her and her consistency and she’s practically a lock for the team.
Mckayla Maroney: 2011 world Vault Champion.
That vault. Mckayla can only really give to team USA on vault, but boy can she give!becauce of her explosive amanar and that she’s a shoe in for gold in vault event finals she should be a lock for the team but can Martha really afford to bring a specialist on a event USA Is already strong on? It would be a shame if she was left off. Vault finals wouldn’t be the same without her. She’s also rumoured to be the first woman to attempt a triple twist on vault and to upgrade her 2nd vault to a cheng.
Gabrielle Douglas: 2011 world team member.
The Flying Squirrel Douglas proved herself as a lock for the team when she unofficially won the American cup over world champion Jordyn Wieber in March. She’s a strong All-Arounder and amazing on USA’s weakest event – Uneven bars. A likely specialist for the team. Her inconstancy could hold her back.
Nastia Liukin: 2008 olympic AA champion. 4 Time National Champion Nastia’s strong on USA’s weakest event the uneven bars and is also training beam and floor. Has yet to make her comeback her chances of making the team are now lowered because of Gabrielle Douglas only one of them are likely to make the team.
Shawn Johnson: 2007 World Champion, 2008 Olympic Gold Medallist.
Shawns comeback started last year at the 2011 Covergirl classics where she gave a strong performance- with falls. But really got the ball rolling at Nationals where she was solid on Beam,Bars and Vault. She was named Alternate for the worlds team after coming up an inch short at selection camp. Shades of old Shawn were seen as the 2011 Pan Am games which she attended, but there’s still a question mark on her floor routine.
Rebecca Bross: 2010 National champion, 2009, 2010 world Medallist. A Scary vault caused an injury at 2011 national. Rebecca was a strong contender for London 2012 and 2011 worlds team. Made a comeback in WOGA classic on two events. Falling on both. Currently competing in The City Of Jeslo Trophy where she is still not competing in the all around. Rumoured to be training an amanar.
Alicia Sacramone: 2010 World Vault Champion and 2008 Olympic Team Captain.
A torn Achilles took Alicia out of worlds two days before prelims. Alicias strongest on Balance beam and Vault, two of USA’s already strong events. Her biggest rival for the team is Aly Raisman, her training partner. Time will tell if her injury will be recovered in time to make the team.
Chellsie Memmel. 2008 Olympian, 2005 world champion.
Her comeback was what comeback dreams were made of! Who would of thought Chellsie Memmel would best Shawn Johnson at gymnastics! She’s was in 3rd place at nationals until her last rotation – Bars. Where she fell twice, and ice on the shoulder leaded to surgery that would keep her off the worlds team.
Bridget Sloan. 2008 olympian, 2009 world champion, future Florida Gator. Almost ready to debut her Amanar. Could be a strong All Arounder for USA.
Kyla Ross. Pacific Rim Silver Medalist In The All Around.
This 1st year senior has caused a lot of buzz! A strong All Arounder. Strong on Uneven bars. Her chances of making the team are low as there is already enough All arounders fighting for a place.
Any of these girls has the ability to make the team! But only 5 can do it. Time and trails will tell. Leave Your Comments Below! 🙂
